Call for papers - Governance and CSR Management in Sport

Special issue from Corporate Governance

Guest Editors
Dr Tim Breitbarth, Bournemouth University, United Kingdom
Dr Stefan Walzel, German Sport University Cologne, Germany
Christos Anagnostopoulos, Coventry Business School, United Kingdom
Frank van Eekeren, Utrecht University, The Netherlands

The objective of this special issue is to publish high quality papers that promote the understanding of the conceptualisation and application of (good) governance and corporate social responsibility in sport organisations. In particular, the focus of this special issue is on theory-driven contributions.

Clearly, the manifestations of the international corporate governance and CSR debates need to be considered by modern sport managers and administrators. The increasing commercialisation of sport, its high media coverage and social resonance create new pressures on the democratic management of sport organisations and its sound governance. Because of the very strong link between sport organisations and their local/national/global stakeholder communities, CSR is obviously a central aspect for any sport organisations.

Arguably, CSR-oriented organisational strategies, activities and communication help sport organisations to be more robust and competitive, and less dependent on short-term sporting performance only. CSR-oriented processes are concerned less with what kind of goals are achieved, but how they are achieved. While the growing research literature concerning this area has been much focusing on descriptive accounts and the ‘content’ of CSR in sport, the focus of this special issue is on the integration with contextual and process aspects in particular.

Therefore, we are interested in both conceptual and empirical studies focusing on any level (e.g. amateur/professional and national/international sport organisations, team/individual sports, business/social/political domain) that draw on a variety of theoretical perspectives (e.g. institutional theory, political theory, agency theory, signalling theory, resource/process management theory, discourse theory, critical theory), and in quantitative as well as qualitative methodological approaches.

Many questions remain around how, why and when sport is – arguably – unique for being a social-political and economic institution, and therefore suitable to be understood by the business principles and practices of CSR and good governance. Hence, possible topics for contributions include, but are not limited to, the following issues:

A meta-analysis (review) of published research on the association between corporate governance/CSR and/in sport.

The linkage between (corporate) governance/CSR theories and sport management.

The impact of changes in organisational governance and CSR on a particular organisations/sports.

The (in-)dependence from political influences as a key basic elements of sport governance.

The link between governance scandals (e.g. corruption, vote-fixing) and governance systems.

Governance in non-profit sports organisations.

Stakeholder tension and management decision-making in conflict situation.

The implementation and compliance of good governance in international sport federations.

CSR in sport organizations: strategic choice, agency and different ways to respond to organisational challenges.

The effectiveness of licensing measures, such as the UEFA Financial FairPlay Regulations.

The influence of commercial partner on sport governance systems.

Critical reflection on the commercialisation of the acknowledged educational and integrative values of sport.

The implementation and performance measurement of CSR.

Value production through CSR and sport

Contributions from all around the globe are welcome.
How To Submit

Business models for sustainable technologies: Exploring business model evolution in the case of electric vehicles

Sustainable technologies challenge prevailing business practices, especially in industries that...

Embedded in the literature on business models, this paper explores how incumbent and entrepreneurial firms’ path dependencies have affected the evolution of business models for electric vehicles. Based on a qualitative analysis of electric vehicle projects of key industry players over a five-year period (2006-2010), the paper identifies four business model archetypes and traces their evolution over time. Findings suggest that incumbent and entrepreneurial firms approach business model innovation in distinctive ways. Business model evolution shows a series of incremental changes that introduce service-based components, which were initially developed by entrepreneurial firms, to the product. Over time there seems to be some convergence in the business models of incumbents and entrepreneurs in the direction of delivering economy multi-purpose vehicles.

It seeks to unite the efforts of various scientific disciplines in response to the key challenges faced by network studies today, and to exchange local research results – thus allowing an analysis of global processes. It is also crucial for us to support the orientation of junior researchers in the complex landscape of network science and to encourage applications of network analysis by practitioners.

The idea of the 2014 event is to discuss the key current issues and problems of linking theoretical and methodological developments in network analysis.

IMPACT Project finalised - Final Conference 17&18 September 2013

For the past three years ABIS has been a member of the largest European research to date on the...

The Final Conference

The project reached its completion with the Final Conference in September 17&18 held in Brussels. The conference, brought together stakeholders from academia, business, network organisations, policy makers and general audience.

The main objectives of the conference were to: learn about the main findings of the project, discuss the project’s results and their implications in the context of emerging EU policies as well as discuss the implications of the project’s findings on management. Additional access to the project’s executive summary was granted.

The welcome session with opening remarks provided by Viscount Etienne Davignon – Minister of State and former Vice President European Commission set the tone for a fruitful discussion. The main findings of the project and conclusions from the conference are captured in the following points:.

1/ Sustainability issues seen as highly relevant - The project found that almost all small, medium-sized and large companies state that they conduct their own CSR activities and are aware of most of the sustainability issues specified in the survey.

2/ Large gap between awareness and activity - This strong awareness of sustainability issues does not always result in companies becoming active. The IMPACT project shows that this was not the case with six of the issues. One example is the problems associated with the high demand for critical raw materials, of which the responsible persons in the automotive industry are aware. Yet those surveyed specified that they were not actively taking counter measures to address the problem. The same mechanism was identified in the case of water consumption in the clothing industry.

3/ The question of whether CSR results in economic profit cannot be answered in a general way by the research project; it can only give a definite answer with regard to each specific sustainability issue.

4/ More political direction of CSR is needed - The results of the study clearly show that a “more of the same” approach will not bring about any fundamental change towards a sustainable economy. Relying on self-commitments and voluntary measures of industry – as has been the case up to now – proves to be insufficient. “Soft” political incentives (e.g. awards and information/network platforms for CSR activities in Germany) have not had a significant effect. This is the finding of a survey of experts conducted within the scope of the IMPACT project.

The methodology of the study

Seventeen European research partners were involved in the study funded by the European Commission. Oeko-Institut is responsible for the project management and ensuring that quality standards are met. Furthermore the institute is actively involved in the development of research questions and synthesizes all the results into one work package.

The empirical studies encompass an econometric analysis of more than 2,000 large and more than 5,000 small-sized businesses, case studies on 19 large European companies from the automotive, retail, clothing, building and ICT sectors, five CSR network analyses and a Delphi study. The latter includes a written survey of 500 CSR experts.

The I4S Consortium meets three times a year to provide platforms for the delivery of diverse research and personal skills training activities and expose the progress made in individual research projects. The latest event took place in Exeter (UK) from the 4th to the 8th of November 2013. The workshop was hosted by Exeter Business School and organised by Dr. Sally Jeanrenaud in cooperation with ABIS.

The event essentially featured:

the exploration of diverse social science perspectives used in organisational studies (positivism, social constructionism, critical realism, systems thinking) through a session designed and led by Dr. Sally Randles, Manchester Business School.

the piloting of some research methodologies on the theme of 'innovation for transformation', an exercise facilitated by Dr. Erik Hansen from Leuphana University and Dr. Sally Jeanrenaud in collaboration with the Eden project's team.

discussions on how to write successful manuscripts (a session led by Dr. Kosheek Sewchurran) and interpret referee reports and decision letters (a session led by Prof. Neil Adger, Professor in Geography at Exeter University and Editor of Global Environmental Change).

the exploration of assertiveness training & time management (a session led by John Mitchell, HR consultant at Clarity Skills).

The I4S project is now heading towards its 3rd meeting to be hosted by ABIS in February 2014. On this occasion, ABIS corporate members and I4S project's non-academic partners will be invited to provide insights into their own experiences of fostering/pursuing sustainability-driven innovation. ESRs will have the opportunity to sound out their ideas with business practitioners.

Journal of Business Ethics

ABSTRACT: The growing body of literature on partnerships has paid most attention to their implications at the macro level, for society, as well as the meso level, for the partnering organisations. While generating many valuable insights, what has remained underexposed is the micro level, i.e. the role of managers and employees in partnerships, and how their actions and interactions can have an effect on the spread and potential effectiveness of collaborative efforts. This article uses a case-study approach to empirically explore the patterns and potential boundary conditions of so-called ‘trickle effects’ of partnerships among individual actors within and outside partnering companies, which have thus far only been proposed conceptually. Based on interviews with employees from three different companies, we found evidence of trickle-down and trickle-up effects with higher and lower management, as well as trickle-round effects with colleagues, family, friends and customers. The article discusses several partnership characteristics that seem to play a role, and notes implications for research and practice.

Kolk, A.
Journal of Macromarketing

ABSTRACT: This article aims to improve the understanding of how micro-level subsistence activities might be related to higher-level phenomena to increase well-being of individuals and communities in contexts characterized by institutional gaps. Using coffee as illustrative case, it explores the link between local entrepreneurial activities in developing countries and global marketing systems, with specific attention to the role of institutions. In this way, the article also sheds some light on broader research challenges identified in the marketing and society area on the role of marketing in addressing sustainability and poverty, especially institution-building and failure in development. Insights from coffee projects to help small farmers, undertaken in different settings all characterized by institutional gaps, exemplify the emergence of ‘compensatory structures’: new/different networks, intermediary entities and partnerships. They further knowledge transfer, market access and capacity building, combining forces through producer groups and cooperatives, and creating links with trading/exporting companies, and often also sector organizations and government agencies, thus illustrating the dynamics at play. While positive outcomes are found, the article also discusses limitations related to certification, access to finance and extension in time and scale, as well as implications for research and practice.
