ABIS Thought Leadership Roundtable ‘Sustainability & Social Innovation’

9 December 2013, Brussels. This is an invitation only event.

The second ABIS TRT will draw on the overview of ABIS Special Issue "Strategic Innovation for Sustainability"* (from 2012 ABIS Colloquium hosted by IMD in Lausanne) and the just published handbook '"Social Innovation - Solutions for a Sustainable Future" * by Dr. Thomas Osburg, Director Europe Corporate Affairs, Intel Corp.
The special issue and handbook will be distributed at the meeting to all participants

What is unique about this new insight?

Social Innovation can be understood as a new cross-sectorial collaboration achieving business and societal benefits by using resources typically from the private sector, governments and NGO's to create innovations that solve societal issues within and outside the company. Social in this sense is understood as a focused direction of innovation, usually implying a normative approach that creates something positive for society, in terms of social, environmental and / or economic impacts. In order to achieve this, Social Innovation needs to be integrated into the innovation processes of the firm. Social Innovation is not CSR. While innovation has always been in the DNA of firms, it has not been an integral part of CSR. Ultimately, the responsibility of the company (for employees, environment, community, etc.) will stay and Social Innovation will add a new dimension in truly creating Shared Value - for society and the company alike. Social intrapreneurs - individuals within large corporations who take direct initiative for innovations which address social or environmental challenges profitably, often out-with their day-jobs, are one of the exciting ways that companies can foster more social innovation.

What is unique about this event?

This event, which is sponsored by Intel (a corporate member of ABIS), enables corporate executives and academics conducting relevant research all to strengthen each other's insights in the way that social innovation and social intrapreneurism can contribute to sustainability.
The format of the day will be a combination of short. keynote addresses and a moderated discussion involving all participants. In advance of the meeting, ABIS will distribute a digest of relevant articles to all attendees.

As branded by ABIS, the results ensure deep insight, an embedded approach and the possibility to change towards a better performance of business in society.
Among the key speakers at the event will be:

Dr. Thomas Osburg, Director Europe Corporate Affairs, Intel Corporation

Prof. David Grayson, Director of the Doughty Centre for Corporate Responsibility, Cranfield School of Management

Who should attend?

Given the focus, we aim to target C-suites, learning officers, heads of talent and new business development, strategy directors and senior experts within the companies in related fields and’ therefore, not limit the event to the Sustainability directors and CSR officers only.
In order to expand synergies, we invite all interested business members to bring 1 to 2 additional people from their own company or out of their value chain with interest in the topic.
ABIS academic members, expert in the field, will also be invited to participate and to contribute to the debate.

Timing and venue

11:00 am to 3:00 pm including light lunch at DIAMANT Conference & Business Centre - Bd. A Reyerslaan 80, B-1030 BRUSSELS.

ABIS Thought Leadership Round Table “Business /government interface: Beyond lobbying”

21 November 2013, Brussels. This is an invitation only event.

The ‘Beyond Lobbying’ report, based on interviews with public officials and corporate executives involved in the activity of lobbying, will serve as a starting point of the debate, supported by an analysis of EU-wide corporate / government relations developed with Profs. Nada Kakabadse and Andrew Kakabadse, together with Dr. Stefan Schepers (EPPA) and ABIS.
The report will be distributed at the meeting to all participants.

What is unique about this new insight?

The business/government interface is shifting. The purpose of the study was to identify how to realise a greater level of governance innovation in corporate/government relations through partnering, transparency of practice and accountability, thus the title ‘Beyond Lobbying’.
The Lisbon treaty and the current global economic crisis have led to more dramatic shifts in management than ever before. Radical new thinking, new methodologies and collaborative governance is needed. A paradigm shift is required in order to align corporate strategy with the needs of the various stakeholders.
ABIS and its member companies will play a lead role in this activity, which will build competitive advantage for all those participating.

What is unique about this event?

This event, which is sponsored by EPPA (a corporate member of ABIS), enables corporate executives and academics conducting relevant research all to strengthen each other’s insight in the way that business and government should interface in the future.

Hosted by Centre for Sustainability Management, Leuphana University Lüneburg, Germany, on 1-4...

Aim and scope

The Academy of Business in Society (ABIS, formerly EABIS) and the Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM) at Leuphana University Lüneburg cordially invite doctoral students (PhD and DBA) to attend the ABIS doctoral summer school 2013.
The summer school aims at enhancing students’ research contribution towards advancing the field of corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility and business ethics. Particular attentions is paid to developing frameworks, models and management approaches that address research questions and provide guidance to practitioners.
A limited number of students will have the opportunity to be actively engaged in revisiting their research and doctoral work in the inspiring environment of one of most renowned universities in the field of sustainability sciences. The summer school will bring together students at various stages of doctoral research progress, creating an opportunity for extensive networking.

Outcome and benefits

The summer school will aim at strengthening the dialogue between practitioners and young researchers. The input sessions will provide insights into corporate challenges and current approaches to tackling them. The group work will enhance this transfer of knowledge. Subsequently, a main objective of the summer school will be approaching these challenges based on extant developments in the field. The ultimate aim will be capturing these challenges, interpreting them and analysing them from a scientific perspective. The tangible output of the summer school will thus constitute a discussion paper that a) summarizes the challenges businesses face and b) sketches a roadmap to solving them.

Programme outline:

The three-day summer school provides a welcoming atmosphere for discussing innovative approaches to corporate sustainability management as well as frameworks and models to deal with current and future environmental, social and economic challenges. Supported by distinguished international researchers the participants of the doctoral summer school will work out key management challenges of corporate sustainability, CSR and business ethics.
ABIS Annual Doctoral Workshop

15 October, Nyenrode, The Netherlands - EXTENDED DEADLINE: 9th September!

Are you a doctoral student pursuing work around ‘business in society’ issues?
Would you like to become part of a global community of young researchers and engage with doctoral students from different parts of Europe, and beyond?
Are you looking for career advice and opportunities to publish?
Do you want to meet the leading scholars in your field and discuss your work with them in a one-to-one session?
Do you want to be considered for the “ABIS 2013 Doctoral Workshop Best Contribution Award”?

After hosting a PhD Day for 10 consecutive years, ABIS will broaden its scope this year to host a Doctoral Workshop that will bring together PhD + DBA candidates from across Europe and beyond to share their research experience, their findings and the challenges they face in their studies in the field of business in society — including corporate responsibility, sustainability, social entrepreneurship, social issues in management and business ethics.

You may ask what PhDs and DBAs have in common… The first factor is their interest in furthering the ‘business in society’ agenda, and their common need to get the empirical research and conceptual framing done that will drive the agenda forward in terms of institutional change. A second factor is that PhDs will encounter practice-oriented executives in their classrooms. We believe that these crucial relationships between theory and practice are best built early on in people’s careers.

This Doctoral Workshop will be unique in bringing together junior and senior academic voices in the field, and in connecting doctoral students with different kinds of interests in theory and practice. Through the Doctoral Workshop we hope to inform all aspects of doctoral students' career planning: how to collaborate and partner with senior scholars, how to engage with practitioners and corporate clients, plus how to successfully engage as teacher with your MBA and MSc students on a graduate level, and students from other disciplines on an undergraduate level. In addition, we will announce the official launch of the ABIS Doctoral Network during the ABIS Doctoral Workshop.

The ABIS Doctoral Workshop is an outstanding opportunity for PhD and DBA students to:

Explore research methodologies appropriate to the field of business in society.

Benefit from the advice and feedback of senior researchers.

Gain insights from senior editors on publishing doctoral work.

Network with peers from around Europe and beyond.

Engage in intergenerational and interdisciplinary dialogue with academics and companies

Understand the teaching challenges that you will face in your career

Learn how to work with practitioners on cases and empirical research

In line with the theme of the ABIS 12th Annual Colloquium “Sustainability and Finance”, this year’s Doctoral Workshop will focus on the interfaces between strategy, finance and sustainability. Please note, however, that we welcome contributions from any doctoral candidates pursuing work around ‘business in society’ issues.

Moderated feedback will be given by selected peers and internationally well-reputed guest faculty. In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of their own contribution to the research field, participants will be encouraged to submit a revised version of their contribution to be considered for publication in the Young Scholar Special Issue of the Business and Professional Ethics Journal.

Closing Conference for Phase I of Practical Wisdom for Management Project

9-10 July, Yale University, USA

The Yale-EABIS Practical Wisdom Initiative looks at the practical virtues inherent in managerial decision-making, which leads to wise decisions in strategic management, leadership, finance, and human resource management. In this way it avoids the constraints imposed on debate and reflection by an externally conceived, normative, arbitrary list of virtues and ethical principles.

This project has produced deep conversations between practioneers and academic experts within each of the world’s six great faith traditions (Christian, Chinese, Jewish, Islamic, Indian and Buddhist). These will be synthesized, compared and extolled at a major global culminating gathering of business, academic, media and religious leaders at Yale in July.

This final conference conference has been created to bring together world renowned leaders, philosophers, economists, business executives and managerial scholars to engage in reflection and dialogue as the culmination of our series over the past three years on various religious and philosophical traditions in management.
This is an initiative from EABIS and Yale’s Center for Faith and Culture/Yale Divinity School, supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

Innovation for Sustainability

12-15 June, Copenhagen, Denmark

The “I4S” Initial Training Network is designed to study sustainability-driven innovation (SDI) in support of the European Union’s strategic commitment to ‘smart, sustainable and inclusive growth’. Preliminary research and prospective studies suggest that SDI involves management competences and organisational capabilities rarely found in traditional business-led, technology-driven innovation. It draws on new platforms of actors or a blend of social and business innovation. It can also lead to new business models that create and capture value, providing for performance in economic, environmental and social terms (including models drawn from nature which can be used as inspiration for innovation).

EABIS 2012 Leaders’ Forum - Sustainability: Brand, reputation and customer perceptions

Does the individual consumer really care enough to let sustainability issues influence brand...

Public awareness and understanding of global sustainability challenges may be rising. But is that impacting on the behaviour of companies and their commitment to developing sustainable products, services and business models? Does the individual consumer really care enough to let sustainability issues influence brand consideration and, ultimately, their final purchase decision? Or is the reality of the changing business environment - with increasing resource scarcity, regulatory pressures and competition for existing and new markets - forcing companies to shape the expectations of consumers?

Of course, people as consumers are only one part of the story. What of companies and other private and public sector organisations as customers? How are sustainability challenges impacting on the supply chain and the behaviour of these organisations in their procurement processes? Is price the overriding issue or are other factors influencing purchasing decisions? Is sustainability going beyond low threshold supply chain vetting processes and into the mindset of the procurement function? To what extent is this determined by other business functions – finance, product designers and developers, marketers and the people who have to sell the end product?
These are just some of questions, implications and current and future responses that will be explored at this year's EABIS Leaders' Forum.

The interactive discussion between leading representatives of companies, business schools and other authoritative commentators will be inspired by the launch of two major new pieces of EABIS corporate partner funded research:

INSEAD’s Craig Smith will present the findings of his investigation into consumer perceptions of company brand and reputation and the impact of the so-called ‘halo effect’

Researchers from Bath, Ingolstadt and Milan will present their examination into the corporate experience of implementing responsible supply chain management

Valuing Non-Financial Performance

This important one-day event will take place on 13 November 2012, at Nyenrode Business...

Key points

This important one-day event will bring together company managers, asset managers, asset owners, advisers, researchers, scholars and key commentators.

Date and location: 13 November 2012 (09:00-18:00), Nyenrode Business Universiteit, Breukelen, Netherlands (close Schiphol Airport)

Price: Free to EABIS and CSR Europe members, and selected contributors.

Deadline: For expressions of interest in contributing to the programme and registration for event - October 19, 2012

Numbers are limited so early registration is advised.

Contact for all questions:

Context

There is growing awareness that the value of the business organisation is not adequately presented by financial performance, and that non-financial performance should play a more prominent role in strategy and investment decisions. Current value measurement models are set up to measure easily quantifiable data for which there are commonly accepted standards of measurement - hence the emphasis on traditional financial performance indicators –and may no longer be fit for purpose. When making strategy and investment decisions, business leaders and investors operate with only partial information.

Investors and companies that assess performance only through short-term quarterly earnings and consequent movements in stock price tend to overlook less tangible drivers which are instrumental in the creation (or destruction) of companies’ sustainable value. With 80% of stock markets’ value not represented in ‘financials’ we are seeing the growth of trends to expand the concept of value such as stakeholder or shared value and value chains and the search for valuation models and management tools that better reflect these trends.

The concept of value is expanding in time (from short term to long term, sustainable value) and space (from single shareholders to multiple stakeholders). So how can we:

1. identify more effective ways in which companies and investors can monetise or valorise non-financial factors in existing investment case or valuation processes and models?
2. where this is not possible, develop indicators that more truly represent the full value (including the full risks), short and long term, of a business organization and help investors (asset owners and asset managers) and business leaders (boards, CEOs and CFO’s) to make better informed decisions?
3. ensure business schools integrate these concepts to ensure current and future business leaders have a good understanding of valuing non-financial performance?

Defining the current state of knowledge

The Academy of Business in Society and CSR Europe are co-convenors of a collaborative venture exploring the relationship between financial and non-financial performance of organisations. There are two primary components:

1. A company project investigating the measurement and management of non-financial performance in the pursuit of improvement in both and a rationale for greater alignment with strategy and key business results
2. An investor project, Delphi, comprising major asset managers, asset owners and advisers in identifying the most material non-financial drivers of financial performance (and its ESG underpinnings)
Both projects draw on the work of the Laboratory on Valuing Non-Financial Performance and the parallel EABIS-funded research ‘Sustainable Value’.

This event seeks to advance knowledge and understanding of the relationship between financial and non-financial performance and address those three key questions. The focus will be on:

1. exploration by company managers of the relationship between financial and non-financial performance drivers and the potential impact of those linkages, inter alia, on:
       a) access to finance
       b) internal investment/business case analysis
       c) risk assessment
       d) credit analysis
       e) HR, project and supply chain planning
       f) financial and integrated reporting
2. asset managers pooling intellectual property to define and refine a framework of material non-financial performance indicators and related factors;
3. a parallel discussion of asset owners on the rationale and validity of the emergent findings of both companies and asset managers;
4. examination of the state of academic knowledge in this area and the gaps in research and management education.

Your active participation is sought

This call for contributions is aimed at potential participants in this one-day event, where numbers are limited, and seeks expressions of interest from those with knowledge and experience in relevant fields such as:

1. Company analysis and practical application in business models and management tools
2. Development of investment case, risk, project management, credit analysis models etc
3. Financial and non-financial analysis and modeling in equity, bond and other capital markets
4. ESG research, particularly where integrated in mainstream investment decision making
5. Development of due diligence analysis particularly where linked to M&A activity and/or subsequent IPO placements

We are keen to have contributions from:

1. Company practitioners in fields of:
        a) Finance and/or corporate development
        b) Risk and corporate governance
        c) Project management
        d) Product/market development and allied marketing
        e) Human and intellectual capital management
2. Asset managers and owners

4. Corporate finance and commercial market and fixed income analysts
