ABIS Annual Doctoral Workshop

15 October, Nyenrode, The Netherlands - EXTENDED DEADLINE: 9th September!

Are you a doctoral student pursuing work around ‘business in society’ issues?

Would you like to become part of a global community of young researchers and engage with doctoral students from different parts of Europe, and beyond?

Are you looking for career advice and opportunities to publish?

Do you want to meet the leading scholars in your field and discuss your work with them in a one-to-one session?

Do you want to be considered for the “ABIS 2013 Doctoral Workshop Best Contribution Award”?

After hosting a PhD Day for 10 consecutive years, ABIS will broaden its scope this year to host a Doctoral Workshop that will bring together PhD + DBA candidates from across Europe and beyond to share their research experience, their findings and the challenges they face in their studies in the field of business in society — including corporate responsibility, sustainability, social entrepreneurship, social issues in management and business ethics.

You may ask what PhDs and DBAs have in common… The first factor is their interest in furthering the ‘business in society’ agenda, and their common need to get the empirical research and conceptual framing done that will drive the agenda forward in terms of institutional change. A second factor is that PhDs will encounter practice-oriented executives in their classrooms. We believe that these crucial relationships between theory and practice are best built early on in people’s careers.

This Doctoral Workshop will be unique in bringing together junior and senior academic voices in the field, and in connecting doctoral students with different kinds of interests in theory and practice. Through the Doctoral Workshop we hope to inform all aspects of doctoral students' career planning: how to collaborate and partner with senior scholars, how to engage with practitioners and corporate clients, plus how to successfully engage as teacher with your MBA and MSc students on a graduate level, and students from other disciplines on an undergraduate level. In addition, we will announce the official launch of the ABIS Doctoral Network during the ABIS Doctoral Workshop.

The ABIS Doctoral Workshop is an outstanding opportunity for PhD and DBA students to:

  • Explore research methodologies appropriate to the field of business in society.
  • Benefit from the advice and feedback of senior researchers.
  • Gain insights from senior editors on publishing doctoral work.
  • Network with peers from around Europe and beyond.
  • Engage in intergenerational and interdisciplinary dialogue with academics and companies
  • Understand the teaching challenges that you will face in your career
  • Learn how to work with practitioners on cases and empirical research

In line with the theme of the ABIS 12th Annual Colloquium “Sustainability and Finance”, this year’s Doctoral Workshop will focus on the interfaces between strategy, finance and sustainability. Please note, however, that we welcome contributions from any doctoral candidates pursuing work around ‘business in society’ issues.

Moderated feedback will be given by selected peers and internationally well-reputed guest faculty. In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of their own contribution to the research field, participants will be encouraged to submit a revised version of their contribution to be considered for publication in the Young Scholar Special Issue of the Business and Professional Ethics Journal.
